Camponotus barbaricus 2 - Berenice

Post by laziusniger on Mon Aug 10, 2015 4:59 pm

Well, I don't have a picture of Berenice herself, but her new home is here:

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out and will probably be moving her in tomorrow - at least, I'll be placing the test tube in and letting her move in her own time, as I'm not sure the first colony particularly appreciated being dropped into their current nest.

Berenice and her family sat in their tube on the surface for a few days, with scouts scared to even leave the tube. I was a little worried that they wouldn't get out and find any food, so decided to kill two birds with one stone.

I'd fished a few queens out of the pool after the recent mating flights, including some which hadn't dropped their wings. I kept them in a test tube for a while to see if they would, but no luck. I decided that, since they'd missed the flights, they'd end up as food one way or the other and it might as well be for mine - particularly with all the energy stores they hold.

Anyway, I killed one and pushed it into the tube, at which point one of the workers jumped on it and then seemed to act very proud about protecting the queen. The others set sentries at the mouth of the tube, sent out scouts, and they had all moved into the chambers by the morning.

Current status:
6 workers

Glad to hear the Colony is moving well. Can't wait to see how large this Colony gets in the months to Come before Hibernation.

I haven't noticed Berenice's colony doing much at all which is concerning me, given Arsinoe's fate. Still, she now has nine daughters running around with about 6-7 brood at various stages. At least the colony is growing, so they must be getting food somehow. Hopefully things will pick up after their hibernation.

I don't know why, but I cannot get a good picture of these. Probably just needs better lighting, as the camera seems to get the other colonies fine.

With Camponatus the larvae will stop growing before Hibernation, sometimes even a month before Hibernation. But as soon as it's over they usually start to lay again and larvae should start growing and such.
