Lasius flavus 2 - Catherine

Post by laziusniger on Mon Aug 10, 2015 4:55 pm

Fished out of a pool after the early August mating flights, Catherine is alive and well after one week. No sign of any eggs yet, though.

Recategorising these to Lasius flavus as, on review, they have that yellow-gold cast to their abdomen as opposed to the niger's silver-brown.

Catherine has a new home:

Typically, she's chosen to live under the taped off area on the right. At least I know hwta to do different next time I make one of these.

Wow I haven't seen a CD Case setup in ages, since before the big "Ant Market" thing....

Really nice to see this old style stuff still gets used!

Good luck with the Colony Lasius flavus is not too "active" or so I've been told Razz

An update on Catherine - she's dug out her chamber to the depth of that taped off section, and about twice as wide. More excitingly for me, she'd started laying! Only about 10 eggs that I can see so far, but it's a start. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to get a good photo of it, but maybe it'll get easier once her first daughters hatch and they start digging tunnels?

By the way, what was the Ant Market thing you mentioned? I've not heard of that.

Oh I meant the whole AntsCanada, and THA thing, the "big companies of ant keeping" haha.

Yeah once they have workers they should start expanding, right now the queen is laying where she feels the safest, at this point it's better for her to stay in the dark and hidden so that's what she's doing.

Oh I see, I thought you meant there was some scandal about them, rather than that companies started making habitats!

I wouldn't mind her choosing to make her chamber under the tape if I was keeping her in the open, but the case is covered in aluminium foil and kept in a closed cupboard - there's no light to influence the decision! Ah well, I'll just have to be patient...

Haha no, I just meant before people started making and selling formicariums, people would just use whatever was around, such as CD Cases, I was merely remembering the "Good Old Days" so to speak when I first got into ant keeping.

Yeah the hardest part of ant keeping is the Patience part. I hope she does well for you!
