Messor Barbarus - Suiko

Post by laziusniger on Sat Aug 01, 2015 1:57 pm

I'm quite excited about starting this colony because it combines two of the things I find coolest in an ant species - harvesting seeds to make bread and producing soldiers. I mean, look at the size of the heads on those biggies!:

(and their teeny little waists Very Happy)

They're currently sitting in temporary accommodation as their formicarium isn't ready for them yet, but they don't seem to mind too much that it's just a foraging box. The queen in particular is much more adventurous than either my Lasius niger or Camponotus barbaricus queens, often going for a little walk around the area before returning to her test tube (presumably for the humidity).

I'm close to having their new home ready, though. Inspired by ekimmik, I decided to try something on a smaller scale using cement:

It's just about ready for a first coat of paint - in fact, I should probably be doing that now rather than writing this post so, without further ado, that's what I'm off to get done right now! Wink

Cool! They are used to crush seeds right? I remember reading they have very important roles in larger Colonies.

Haha yes, when colonies get larger, they require larger seeds, so the Super Majors are used to collect, crush the seeds and then they are give to the smaller ants to make ant bread out of. They are also a kind of 'Soldier' in the colony.

Pogonomyrmex are similar, but don't you have Verspomessor or something like that?

I don't think so. I have heard from someone we have Pogomyrmex in one Province but at the very bottom and they are really really rare to find.

I don't think North America will ease up to be honest and why should they imagine if someone kept some Destructive Species and they got loose?

This formicarium actually went to house Berenice, my second Camponotus barbaricus queen, but I've since made a new colony. This one has smaller, flatter chambers to suit the smaller species. It's taking a bit longer to set properly, though, so perhaps I made the mix too wet this time. I'll post pictures once it's completed.

Also, massively looking forward to seeing the super-majors! Soldier castes and food-processing are two of the things I find most fascinating in ants, so it's nice to get the two together!

I guess, bad idea then.
Ive tried to catch CG Ants for this, and reported them, but never received a response.

And yeah, you don't get many supers though, as they take a lot of food from the colony, atm I have 2-3 in a colony of 100+! They have to be very comfortable, ps. I think ive said on another forum lol but Nest Entrance is a little big for Messor.

Thanks formica - I used a stone and a bit of slate to cover it and the Cap 2 colony moved in. I'll make a smaller hole for my Messors. Smile
