Re: Flying Ant Day

Still to fly here - I lifted my marked rocks and found about 30 alates (in various proportions) under each. The nests were very active today, so hopefully I'll catch a flight in the next couple of days. We had some bad weather here, so maybe that's delayed things a few weeks?

Just wondering though, what sort of time should I focus on checking? We have residential groups in at the moment so, while I can get permission to slip out and look every now and then, it would be good if I can concentrate on the most likely time. No sense looking at 3pm if they fly overnight, for example. Smile

They tend to fly in the afternoons. Smile

Thanks for the tip Myrm. They were still under the rocks by 6.30, so probably not flying today. I'm lifeguarding right by the nests for an hour or so every afternoon, so I'll make sure to have some tubes on me just in case. I've seen two or three queens wandering around on the slabs but none which have mated.

There are also a couple of flavus colonies there too, which would be nice to get a queen or two from. Smile

You'll certainly know about it when the nigers fly as it's a massive synchronised event. Then you'll see all the mated wingless queens scuttling about on the ground. Smile

Maybe an ice cream tub rather than a couple of tubes, then... :p
