Lasius niger 1 - Anne

Post by laziusniger on Mon Jul 13, 2015 1:28 pm

Just been building a new home for my little gals, but could do with some advice on the size - does this seem reasonable?

How many ants are in your colony at the moment?

How large is the colony, that looks like it would hold even Myrm's Lasius niger Colony!

How many ants... er, 14 plus queen? Razz

Yeah, total size might be a bit excessive, in hindsight. I was more thinking about the width and depth of the tunnels.

That size is fine for 14 nigers but it won't take them long to outgrow it Smile

Well, my Lasius niger are coming on alright, but I now have a number of other species. Should I pop them all into this thread (and rename it) or give updates on each colony in separate threads, do you think?

I think you should do a separate thread for each colony, to save any confusion. Smile

I second the threads, It can be very hard to post a journal for each queen/Colony, especially if they are different Species.

Is it possible to have a subboard for each members journals, i would really really find this useful and waaaay easier to update my journals.

Yeah it is really nice to have each queen with her own Journal makes it much more neat and less likely that anyone will mix up queens.

After a few concerns about Anne's health and location, I found her in a chamber on the floor of the box. I've made a larger soil set-up out of two connected Tupperware containers and placed the opened temporary box inside.

Hopefully their new home will be easier to keep hydrated and stocked with food.

If she doesn't have workers a bigger setup can sometimes stress out queens.

Are you from the UK btw? Just wondering lol.
And your probably best leaving her, or transferring her to a test tube setup and leaving her in the dark for a while.

She does have some workers, but i'm finding it difficult to tell how many. I've found a couple escaping from time to time, but i think some may have died off due to aforementioned difficulties in feeding and watering the setup.

Yes, from Cambridge originally and living in Somerset for the next few years.

I think its best you leave her in the current nest, they don't require highly humidified nests anyhow.
Nice, im from Birmingham

Ah right - I've got family over in Wolverhampton, so not far from them. Of course, on a US scale anywhere in England is near to everywhere else... Wink

If you give them a drop of honey or sugar water or something on the surface on a pceice of tin foil, when they find it, all the workers apart from 1 or two will go to drink it, from there you can count the workers +3!
And ill be moving to france later on in the year hopefully, but ive been keeping ants for years! When did you first get into it?
