laziusniger emerges

Post by laziusniger on Thu Jul 02, 2015 12:54 pm

Hi folks,

I'm Ross aka laziusniger, based in Somerset, UK. I've just started an ant colony, and I hope this will be a good place to get advice on how to keep them growing well and share their progress. I've begun a blog where I post every now and then: https://laziusnigercolony.wordpress.com/

Hope to be able to contribute more soon!

Ross

Thanks dermy - everyone seemed to recommend them as a good starter species and I'm certainly a novice!

Hi laziusniger.

Welcome to Dermy's awesome forum, and thank you for supporting my buddy by joining his forum.

Lasius niger are awesome ants to keep. They are my vary favourite species of all. I have a two year old colony of them and they have about 500 ants in their nest. Smile

When I got my colony two years ago they had something like 6-10 workers.

Hi Myrm,

Thanks - I think your site was one of the first I saw when looking into this hobby, and it was certainly the one I remembered when I finally decided to get off my backside and do it! Smile

I'll see how this group do and maybe try to catch a few queens when the nuptial flights start. I know I have Lasius niger and what I think is Lasius flavus on the property, and when I moved one of the stones on a wall while weeding a few days ago, I found a winged queen and some males warming themselves under it. Here's hoping I spot the flight when it happens...

Hi Ross. Welcome to Dermy's Bug Forum. The formicarium you are basing your nest on looks amazing!

I bet the ants will love your formicarium, just make sure to put up some barrier so they don't escape!
