Omg! Guess what? Yellow has a nanitic! I'm shocked! I was just doing a routine check and I happened to spot her as I was about to cover Yellow back up!

I think it just yes to show how good the GroTubes are! Even after being removed from her test tube and frequently observing her spending time away from her brood to collect substrate, she didn't eat her Larvae! She closed part of the inner chamber off to make herself more comfortable and kept them hidden, which okay, might not be the easiest to spot on the light coloured substrate considering how tiny Pheidole are! But otherwise where she failed in a test-tube the GroTube has worked out for her Smile cheers Very Happy

Re: Global Ant Colony Race Journal

Post by Luke on Sat Jul 18, 2015 11:07 am

Dermy,  I think we've jinxed this thread! I checked on Yellow this morning and something wasn't right as I couldn't see the nanitics! Unfortunately, I didn't have time to look properly until I got home a short while ago....

Well, I could see the fruit fly I fed them but still no nanitics.  So I practically convinced myself they must have somehow escaped to forage. Then commonsense kicked in and I knew this couldn't be true, so I checked again. This time I happened to catch Yellow rearranging something on the wall she built....you can probably guess where this is going... Yep, she used the now two dead nanitics to fortify her wall! I just can't believe it pale pale pale Neutral Shocked Crying or Very sad

What's worse is the fact that I probably caused this to happen when I stupidly removed the GroTube lid to place the the fruit fly in yesterday, not trusting in the nanitics to find it:( I think she's one of those queens who just doesn't tolerate even the slightest of disturbances.

Thanks mate. It's odd how one queen can be so successful and the other is so different Neutral I've learnt that I can no longer disturb her daily. So I will just check on her once a week.

I've had real good successes with Lasius niger and some spectacular fails with them. Sometimes, for whatever reason, a healthy queen fails to produce a colony :(
