You are keeping a living creature in captivity you therefore have a moral obligation to care for it, not leave it for weeks without checking up on it. If you can't or won't do that then you should let it go.

I don't think I mistreat my ants, sometimes I don't feed them for a few days but I don't mistreat them.

That is good to hear. Smile

Small ant colonies don't need to be fed everyday, that comes as they grow to the size mine are. However you should really check them on a daily basis, or weekly at the vary least. Sometimes that can't be helped like if you go on vacation. All pets no matter if they're an ant colony or a cat should be looked after.

I usually do look in on them every week when I do my "Invert Checks" mainly just a peak and an open of the foraging area. Mine don't have big air-holes [myrmica will get out or something even with barrier]

It's just been a long 2 weeks here Neutral

Thanks Dermy. Hopefully I done the right thing by moving her. I used a cotton bud to carefully remove her eggs and Larvae.

I have to check mine daily for sanity reasons and pupa spotting.

Ah yes sanitation is key, mold can kill larvae/eggs if it gets on them, but the queens usually like them to sterilize them.

Hopefully she'll be okay when check her in the morning:)

I find it interesting to see how different the ant hobby is across the pond . Watching a few videos and apparently it's quite common to keep the more sensitive queens undisturbed during the founding stage for longer periods of time. I guess the ants are more sensitive than our tough as ol' boots Lasius niger.p

P.S. I'm not saying I agree with this, juse that it's a different approach.  not one that I'd be able to do. I'd need to check the queens daily. Otherwise I would go loopy not knowing what they're upto Razz Very Happy Smile

I'm sure they will Dermy Very Happy

I got a video of Yellow in a GroTube that I purchased Monday with the intention of using it for a Lasius niger when I catch one but that's okay. Very interesting watching her leave her brood to gather materials for her chamber.

That's why I always get more queens then I think I'd need, because for some reason Componatus has a very low success rate for me.
