Global Ant Colony Race?

Post by dermy on Thu Jun 18, 2015 12:53 pm

It has been suggested by Luke that we should do a Ant Colony Race, to see who's colony grows the largest from a Queen.

We will need to figure out some rules so here is the Discussion Thread for that.

Sign Up Sheet
Here are the people Currently Doing the Global Ant Race:

Luke
Entry 1;

Pheidole pallidula "Yellow"
Location -Southern Europe
Status - 10 -30 eggs, no nanitics yet.
Heating - unheated, while she is rearing her first eggs, still relying on our hot weather/humid nights at the moment. It's about 25 in our house atm.

Dermy
Camponatus hearculeanus
Location: Canada
Status: No Eggs/Brood No Workers
Heating: Un-Heated It's about 20C in my House Now.

Not to be a science nerd or anything but doesn't different heating and light and such maybe even food have a play in how these guys grow?!?

what im trying to say is what if ur house is hotter then lukes therefor urs grows faster. or if luke is feeding them something else that ur not and therefor making them grow faster?!?

I really like this idea only problem is there is many different variables....yet again this isn't some science experiment and who knows maybe u will learn from each other..so I really like this idea cant wait to hear whos grows faaster

Yeah there is so many variables. We'd have to figure out some stuff [hence the topic]

I guess we could set limits and such?

Another scientific thing, Species! Different species grow faster and slower then others.

Thanks for your input though! It will probably have to be revised quite a bit now [I never thought about it scientifically haha!]

Thinking about adding this rule:

Each person may have 3 entries but each entry must be a Different Species, and competes with all of the Colonies entered.

I was thinking of getting some but me and alex decided to wait till we are moved to bc before any new pets now so chewy will be the last new pet unless I catch another toad/frog this year... now that I have my own supply of food I don't have to worry about it dying on me :c

Yeah Bc is great for a lot of pet owners u can get rats, mice, turtles, snakes really anything but crocodiles and reticulated pythons nd some venomous snakes. but overall if u want a wicked pet house anything but alberta is ur best bet!! and as for ants I was surprised by how many different species I only knew black ants, red ants, and fire ants xD

Also New Rule:

Unless your Temprature is below 20C you can not use a heat-matt, and if it is less then 20C then you can only use the Heat-Matt to get to 20-24C.

I think it should be anything goes and whoever get the biggest colony within let's say 1 month wins, that way we find out what is the best way to start off

Re: Global Ant Colony Race?

Hmm I don't know then there would be vary big differences in species! My Camponatus can't even get Workers sometimes within a Month! I think we need to re-do this sometime and actually work together as a whole to figure it all out instead of just jumping right in like me and luke have Razz

Maybe making it for Formica or something? you know more fair?

That would be great! As it is an easy Species to view and as you've said everyone has it!

I'm still into doing the current one though if luke still wants to Razz
