How do you keep ants?

Post by Z on Mon Jan 25, 2010 3:16 pm

Just woundering how do you keep ants?
-Where do you find a new foundress?
-What do you house her in?
-Does she need to eat before laying?
-How many eggs does she lay in her first batch?
-How long to egg to worker?
-How long until they need a bigger home?
Thanks!

Hello i'll help you!
-Look in the spring a new Foundress is usually a big bulky ant.If you think you've found one[don't get them with wings just in case she is unmated!] look at the thorax if its higher then the head and huge its a queen!
-Place one queen in a small tube or a very small box with cotton and moisten the cotton everytime it is dry.Keep the Foundress in a dark draw.
-Queens usually lay 15-50 eggs in the first brood but most don't make it as the queen eats them.
-No feeding them unless its a myrmica species.
-It usually takes 35-60 days depending on the species.
-Once the tube is half full of ants move them into a bigger tube or a nest with no sand or soil and a cotton ball.
-Once you have workers feed them honey, insects and bread crumbs.
Need anymore info i'll be glad to help!
