Myrmica Free-Ranging Experiment 2015

Post by dermy on Sun May 10, 2015 12:14 pm

I'm going to try to do a Free-Ranging Myrmica Colony this year, it is when you let the colony's workers leave and forage but the queens are stuck in the nest.

Moved this to the Ant Section since It's not quite a Journal Yet, I will however move it back once It is a Journal.

Yes It will, maybe even revolutionary haha. If it works out well for me this year, every year I will at least have a colony or two Free-Ranging.

One issue I have right off the bat, can I put them under a bush, that has a wasp nest box right above them, or will the ants deliberately go and get to the wasps?

They'll probably leave each other alone. It's hard to say really.

I will just have to put them up higher, I'm sure they won't bother them, if they do then I will move the ants somewhere else.

They shouldn't even care, plus would they even make it into the nest, since by the time I relocate a nest to that area there would be worker wasps. I might just put it in a different bush to solve that problem.

For those wondering why a bush, because I need it to be shady, or the sun exposure will kill them.

Made a hole big enough for workers but too small for queens! I'm ready to test it soon!

I tested it with a queen, her head can fit but the thorax can't

The queens are about twice as fat as a worker.

I tried but to be honest out here in Canada it is still quite cold, they do know how to use the hole, I even gave them a dead moth to see if they could drag it into the nest and they slowly but surely figured out a way to do it.

I will probably have to wait a bit though for it to be a lot warmer out.

Since It's obviously too cold outside to do this right now I'm thinking about letting the colony go back to it's regular schedule and such for at least another 2 weeks.
