Myrmica Rubra

Post by formica123 on Tue May 05, 2015 12:33 pm

Hello Ant Keeping World!
A week or so back I found a colony of Myrmica Rubra by accident Very Happy I was beekeeping and tripped over a brick whilst holding a frame. A lot of angry bees sad
However I uncovered a colony of 500+ workers and 12 or so queens!
I quickly shot out a handy test tube (I had been looking for these with no success earlier! I now know a hotspot for colonies and will be going back sometime this week) and collected what I could. I have 5 queens 100+ workers.
They are housed in a trusty Antstore slimline nest full of sand. They have now got 200+ eggs!

That's good to hear, I've heard Myrmica Colonies [and from my own experience] grow quite fast!

If I find another one in a log destined for fire then I might save it [Most end up being released though].

Your myrmica colonies increase in size sooo much faster than our ones! (Canada and UK)
