Don't worry, I don't give up that easily:)
I guess you could use a bone dry substrate then pile some damp, rotting wood full of isopods, making it harder for ants to nest.

It could work but some species can and do nest in wood.

Maybe disallowing the movement of a queen could help, if the queen can't get out of the nest the whole colony can't move. You'd still probably get a second nest of workers though, and they might bring in substrate into the nest...
