I have used cooking oil with some success in preventing Lasius Niger from escaping but it is messy and needs reapplying frequently. I now use a moat of water in which the foraging box stands which keeps the ants from escaping.

Do you paint it on with a paint brush? Do you know if it will stop Myrmica. Will Vaseline Stop Lasius niger? [Sorry about all the questions just curious and it might help out Woody]

Vaseline I find is not as good as the ants simply dump stuff into it and walk across it. I use a cotton wool ball soaked in cooking oil and use it to brush the inner upper lips of the lid. Smile

Cooking oil is vary good but it runs. I got some of that the draft excluder stuff that is sticky on one side. I put a ring of it sell round the inside of the foraging box, about an inch from the top. Then the inch of glass above the strip I smeared with cooking oil. Then strip soaks up any oil that runs down. Smile

Can you remind me; what ants do you have now, as in numbers and caste?

If it was just a queen ant it may take a month or longer for her first batch of workers to hatch out.

Lasius Niger eggs take about 8 weeks to go from egg to worker. Smile

I'm sure it's been 2 months, she's in a little test tube, water cotton then space for her then cotton sealing her in, kept her in a warm area, and kept her in the dark

Did she hibernate? Did you notice any brood? There are a few things that could be going on:

1- She is unmated [unlikely though]
2- She hasn't layed yet [some are weird like that]
3- She ate the brood [unlikely too, since you would have at least seen some at one point or another]
