Woodys got ants

Post by Woody2332 on Tue Mar 24, 2015 3:23 am

Hi, starting a ant farm, mum runs a nursery, and I'm building her an out side play area, and just renewed the windows and one of double glazed unit was not sealed properly, so the sent me a new unit out, so I have a double glazed unit that is about 560 x 970 so I removed the top sealing bar and have a pretty huge ant farm, I have ordered some Acrilic tubing that sides in perfectly, then I'm going to have a basin??? Outside world section above, just got my queen so waiting on her having a few workers and release her in, going to do the mixture today Smile

Hi Woody2332

Welcome to The Bug Forum, and thank you vary much for joining and supporting Dermy in getting his forum "out there". We have a small active member base at the moment but I'm hoping that we will attract more members as the summer closes in.

The ant farm you intend to use sounds ideal and I'm sure that your Lasius Niger will love it. Smile

Hello Woody, welcome to the Bug Forum! Sounds like you got the best beginner species [In my opinion and many others, including Myrm] They are relitively easy to keep. But sometimes they can be escape artists, like Myrm's Colony. I hope the queen makes a good colony for you.
Also in May-September there will be Ant Nuptial Flights, which is the perfect time to get even more different species.

Generally you need to have the picture hosted somewhere, such as PhotoBucket.

When placing the picture in your post here click the small screen icon with the + symbol in the bottom right corner above the box where you type your message in, about 13 icons in from the B button.

I hope that males sense.

Don't worry about it, I fixed it for you here is how you can also do it if the IMG code doesn't work:

Get the Direct Link, then find the Insert Picture thing [it's right by the chain that is right next to the You-Tube thing] Then paste the link into there and click in 500 by 500 [that's the perfect size] and your all done.

I hope this helps Very Happy

You can do either, but I've heard good results from mixing it all together because then when you moisten it the substrate stays moist everywhere, since i find sand doesn't hold as much moisture as the soil.

Thanks, I did probably a 2/3 mix being more soil than sand, pack it down quite well, not too much though so the substrate is up agaist the glass and no looseness that I can see, you will know what I mean

Yeah that should work pretty Well. I fixed your picture again [Don't understand why it works for me but not others sad ]

It looks good, just make sure it is escape proof! Especially since Lasius niger are very naughty ants at getting out of things.

Do you plan to start the queen out in a small container till she has a few workers at least? That is usually the best route to go.

Just waiting on the acrilic tubing, to make a path up wards to a open world section, what would you suggest feeding them ect, I put a tiny bit of honey in with the queen, got the times to bit on the end of a cocktail stick, or should I just take it out, put her in a warm dark place, will this speed things up? And would you suggest putting thin sticks inside the tubing to help them climb up, ( tubing will be angled at maybe 35 deg) then I'm making like little juction boxes a each end so I can send it the other way) so will be like a zig zag going up to the out side world, which will be one of those sh!*# fish tanks you get from "quality" save,

Yes, that's another thing, would I be able to use a clear silicone, to secure areas?

For just a new queen a little bit of honey won't hurt but other then that Lasius queens don't need any food. They survive on their fat reserves and feed their babies with saliva and tropic eggs [Eggs that are infertile and won't hatch and are used just to feed babies/the Queen]

As for the 35 Degree Tubing as long as it's not too slick you shouldn't need a stick inside of it, but if you want to be sure they can get up it won't hurt to add one in. Just freeze the stick first to make sure nothing is living on it that could potentially harm the ants. Most of the things are stuff we can't see and freezing kills them off. It's always better to be safe then sorry.

The outworld needs to have something to prevent the ants from escaping, Myrm will hopefully know more about this since unfortanately we don't deal with Lasius niger where i am from [Canada] and i don't know what they can and can't get over as far as barriers go.

Feeding the colony once it has workers is easy they will eat most insects [again if you catch them from outside freeze them just to make sure you don't bring in anything potentially dangerous] and a supply of honey/syrup water and make sure to always have some form of water [not standing water, but something like a moist paper-towel bunched up. or Cotton]

Well I'm not 100% sure on that, but I'm sure as long as you allow it to cure and air out it should be fine, let me do a bit of research on the matter and I will get back to you!

Use aquarium silicone or window silicone with no additives but make sure the top of the Tank has none, because that is where you want to put up your barrier [unless your going to have ants crashing the party haha!]
I've heard these work well for Lasius niger:
Fluon or talc.
But they are relitively hard to work with sometimes
To make matters worse i have no clue how to make it right now Razz
