No i don't think it provides them with anything. I would rather clean it out or you risk mold or something.

Only if they are sick [the crickets] and can't hop away and hide.

Other then that I've never heard of anything bad happening, although some say if they get out of control they can eat the crickets food before the crickets can [you'll see them by then and can get some out]

Re: Cricket setup finnally

Post by SpiderSam on Fri Apr 03, 2015 1:33 pm

ok so I got lots of questions
#1 is this container too big its 300 ml mostly tall ... I plan on adding the mesh screen going down the sides so they can climb on it at least Very Happy it was the smallest container I have with a lid

#2 if this is good what kind of dirt (chemical free of course) do I add keep in mind I have no vehicle and the pet store is in the next town so I cant pick up Special dirt and I don't think she has any anyways so my option is Homehardware.... do I get peat moss or what....

#3 do I need to keep it super moist (the dirt that is) I know not to keep it bone dry but is it supposed to be muddy ish or just wet?

1- That container should be fine, as long as you make them accessible, although a smaller hight and longer width is better.
2- I'm not too sure on the Soil, but make sure it has no additives, "nutrient rich formula" or any of that other stuff as that can harm the crickets.
3- I've heard you just keep it moist, not wet but not dry in-between.

Sounds good Very Happy and I will search for a longer container but I don't think they have lids Wil check on that Very Happy and I guess I shall google the best dirt and of course it will be 100% chemical free with no additives

You've got a long time to wait anyway before your crickets reach majority.

That looks like it could work, as long as it fits in the container Razz

It will definitely fit since I found out that they can easily climb cardboard (a lot better then I expected since they are climbing the legs of the platforms) I am going to put it on the top platform there for it will be easily reached for us instead of digging around moving and reorganizing Very Happy

I know that but I wanna be prepared and I got so far 1 Almost Mature female she is the biggest she has a smaller 3rd prong its not as big as the mature but im pretty sure she is close to becoming mature and she is basically dark brown almost black if I can find her and sneak a pic I will

Indeed they do I don't mind selling a few here and there as long as I have about 10 beetles because last time with 15 we got over 20 mealworms (that I can see and count and caught) so at least with 10 beetles we can have another 20 but if no one wants mealworms then I can keep that 20 and multiply to 40 next batch Razz

I have to agree Very Happy and yes dermy im 100% positive that I have more then 20 but that was as many as I could see and catch Razz and of course I will have way more then 40 if I have 20 beetles and if one beetle lays roughly around 500 im looking at about 10,000 for 20 beetles assuming that All 20 are females xD but then I guess I need some males so idk 10 males and 10 females roughly around 5,000 eggs xD
