African Red Spot Assassin Bugs

Post by High Lord Dee on Sat Jan 03, 2015 9:35 pm

My first foray into actual bugs! Picked up an African Red Spot Assassin Bug. Very cool. Tremendous eater! Read they were actually communal so just ordered up two more. Should be in next week

Cool, lets hope you get a Female and a Male and see them reproduce. That's great to hear they are Communal, heck I think I've seen a video of a Small Colony of them.

When I was 10 I went to a Bug Museum and they had a Small Display of Assassin Bugs but they were Black and Yellow ones.

-4!!! Single digits most of the week with a wind chill nearing -15. Too cold for bugs that is for sure.

So I now have three of them in the enclosure. Nervous about the communal thing. Here we go!

So far, so good. All three seem to be eating and hanging out together peacefully.

Quick update: All three Red spots are doing great. 2 of them just molted to adulthood. Big guys! Would not want to get bit by one now for sure. They are incredible hunters and fun to watch.

They are amazing. Not for everyone that is for sure as they are fast, can put on an amazingly painful bite and I hear they can emit a strong odor as a defense. Haven't experienced the last two and plan to keep it that way.

For sure. Even though they are just bugs (versus spiders, scorpions,) I still keep these guys under lock. I am truly amazed as how fast they have grown. A little over a 1/4" when I got them and now about a full inch. I think they have each molted twice in a little less than three months.

That is pretty fast! I think I've seen them as black and yellow colouring at a Entomology thing.

The black and yellow are cool too. Saw them at a show this last weekend. May add them this Spring/Summer.

One of the few predatory bugs that seem okay living together? At least so far for me.
