Yes,  I think scratching may have been involved Embarassed Oh no, don't worry Dermy, I'm not going to go out into my garden and start digging up ants in the Summer Very Happy As you say, I want to get the experience of keeping ants with a caught Lasius niger queen, and watching them grow Very Happy

Have fun with them, and remember growing a colony from one queen takes awhile, I've heard Lasius niger takes 2.5 months sometimes to get first workers.

Yes, even though I've never kept any myself I can tell from your experiences and others that they are indeed naughty ants!

Late response but I am hoping to pick up 6 new scorpion enclosures over the next few months. Also looking to add to my existing shelf unit which should provide me with 4 new bug enclosures and 3-6 misc enclosures. As if I did not have enough! Going to be a busy year.

Lasius niger are the Houdinis of the ant world; if any ant can escape from the most secure set ups, it's Lasius niger.  They have such naughty bottoms >.<

I find that a smearing of cooking oil along the inner edge of the foraging tank works well, but it needs to be frequently reapplied.

No. He got in via an open window above the tank and he jumped into the tank. I heard the soft thud and went to investigate, and there was a tabby cat sitting in the tank looking at me >.<

Cats!?? Now that is just gross tongue

Seriously, I heard on a documentary the other day that the tarantula hobby is exploding so much that there are now concerns about all the harvesting from illegal trade pracices of catching wild caught spiders for the pet hobby there may be serious repercussions to the natural populations. One of the primary drivers is the growth in the hobby in Europe. The United Kingdom has more pet owners with reptiles now than dogs or cats! Who would have dreamed? But the spider is supposed to surpass the dogs/cats in the very near future. How cool is that?
