Another Ant Colony!

Post by dermy on Tue Sep 16, 2014 4:35 pm

I have decided to get another ant colony, just from one of my many "extra queens". I will boost her with a few [5-10 pupae] and various brood from a wild ant colony, so I can get a good head start, hopefully that will induce her to lay eggs, I will also be feeding her regularly. I am going to see how big a colony can get if you feed them daily!

Day#2- September 17/2014- I have boosted her with some new callow workers from an outside colony, this species will accept almost anything! I bet I could [but won't!] add all the workers from that one nest to a different colony and they'd do good.

Anyway I put them in my weird setup I want to test, I also fed them some syrup and water. I will continue to feed them daily, until I can't feed them anymore, then wait for a bit and feed again Very Happy.

Anything bad that you could see with this approach? I assume ants will only eat/consume what the colony can handle, and the queen will just lay more because of the amount of food available? I have to feed them an insect today, hopefully later in winter I have a good supply of mealworms for them.

This colony is taking it slow! But that's okay, it's a lot better then taking care of my large ant colony that has at least 200 workers now!

These guys are also very jumpy and don't attack me when I go in the foraging tank to feed them. That won't last forever though!

Sorry for updating again but I have decided to do something different with this colony, I will be giving them a dirt setup, I know that means I won't be able to see the queen but that's what my other larger colony is for. I want to see what the difference is and what all the fuss is about when keeping them in a dirt setup.

Dirt set ups are good, Dermy, as they mimic the ants' natural environment. Smile
