Vermicomposting 2014 Season 2 Winter Is Comming.....

Post by dermy on Fri Sep 12, 2014 1:42 pm

Since winter is coming I have decided to close the other thread, mainly because I want to keep my Over-Feeding Challenge in one thread, I haven't decided when I will start or end it but it will be soon, probably a week after the first major snow fall. Then i'll have something [other then the Dermestids] to update you guys on during the winter months, when things start to slow down.

I have dismantled the Worm bin, and have added them in with the pods and slugs to help eat the remainder of the food so that when I harvest the enclosure I will get a better yield of compost. I plan to harvest the potatoes in the winter sometime and grow some more so the compost will come in handy.

I will keep you updated...

Yes. A big mix of pods, worms and some slugs, they have already laid a ton of slug eggs. I might just take out all the adult slugs and raise the eggs. That way they don't eat as much. I haven't started preparing for winter for these guys, because I've been sick sad . I hope to get at least 1-3 weeks to get enough for the winter, then I will also have to supplement their diet with house hold vegetables, I hope I get a good yield of potatoes in the middle of winter as well as early winter.

I chopped it up as best as I can and freeze it in the deep freezer. It will last about 2 weeks I think if not more!

It doesn't matter, the worms like it rotten [which it already was] they will devour it quickly, melon is a good reproducing food for worms, and everything else in the bin!

Your Welcome, the whole bottom is just slug eggs, I will have to freeze most of them, because that's too many slug eggs.

I have finally started stockpiling up food for the winter. Only one bag so far but I hope to have at least 10-15 bags full of plants to feed them through the winter. I also plan to try and grow more potato plants in the basement and maybe some flower things, since they like flowers.

I have decided to run three systems this year, two the same as last year. I will use the current container for a few months after I harvest the adult worms for my two other systems, and allow the babies to grow and possibly multiple in the container with the isopods and slugs.

I have one setup all ready to go and I will set up the second in a month so I have a good start off for my breeder bin, and the second one will be my experiment bin.

Hope you can follow this as I was writing quite fast.

I checked inside the bin today and there is a ton of slug eggs, slugs of various sizes, isopods of various sizes [at least 70+ and I plan to get more today!] and a ton of worms! Everything seems to be thriving quite well!
